Handcrafted Wood and Ceramic Sculptures by Expanded Eye Celebrate Natural Materials and Eco-Friendly Art

Expanded Eye blurs the line between abstract and figurative art in their newest collection of earth-inspired sculptures. The artist duo—Jade Tomlinson and Kevin James, based in Lisbon—are well known for their geometric tattoos and bold assemblages made with wood and recycled materials. Their latest work focuses on the divine feminine and the peaceful energy of the Earthmother, expressed through rich textures, patterns, and earthy colors.

The duo has paused their tattoo work to dive deeper into sculptural relief art. Ceramic has become a key material, inspired by Portugal’s famous azulejo tile tradition, which reflects global artistic exchange. These handcrafted sculptures feature serene guardian figures made from natural clay and warm earth tones, aiming to create a sense of calm, stillness, and balance in a fast-moving world. Their art beautifully combines eco-friendly design with deep spiritual themes.

Expanded Eye blends the past and present through powerful, handcrafted art. Their sculptures reflect a deep connection to timeless materials like clay, wood, and stone, inspired by centuries-old methods of carving and building. The bold shapes and fragmented faces in their work also echo the style of early 20th-century Cubism, giving their pieces a modern artistic edge.

The artists describe their process as a fusion of traditional materials and contemporary design, where ancient techniques meet modern creativity. This connection between old and new is what drives their passion.

Currently, Expanded Eye is working on their biggest ceramic tile commission yet and plans to keep combining handmade ceramic art with other parts of their creative practice. You can explore more of their eco-conscious sculptures and custom tile designs on their website and Instagram.
