#9 Moth Interpretations For Halloween

Last year, I decided to get creative for Halloween and did my own DIY moth costume — inspired by the Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda). I used stuff I already had in my wardrobe, a few thrift finds, and some handmade costume pieces, and it turned out so fun that I had to do it again this year!
For this Halloween, I’m bringing to life another beautiful species — the Chlorhoda metamelaena moth, part of the tiger moth family (Arctiinae subfamily). I got inspired after seeing some stunning photos of it by a photographer on Instagram (shoutout to @junglediamonds — seriously amazing shots!).
I’ve included photos from last year’s look and a sneak peek of how this year’s costume is shaping up. I’m still figuring out a few details — might add a pop of yellow with a scarf or belt, maybe paint some black markings on my jacket (or whatever becomes my “wings”), and layer it with some fluff or feathers to mimic that fuzzy-yet-transparent moth vibe. I’ll also be tweaking my Halloween makeup look and fading my hair to really match the colors.
Weather in Minnesota can be tricky around Halloween, so I’m planning to make it cozy but still true to the moth’s design. Honestly, it’s always such a fun creative challenge — studying a moth’s patterns, textures, and colors, then trying to recreate its essence through costume and makeup. It’s like mixing fashion, nature, and art all in one!

#32 My Best Work

I’ve made a lot of fun costumes over the years, but honestly, I still haven’t topped this one. Back in 2014, I turned myself into a shrimp tempura sushi roll costume, and it was a total hit! I used cardboard, painted craft foam for the shrimp, cucumber, crab, and avocado, packing peanuts for rice, pom poms for tobiko, and felt for the nori wrap.
To complete the look, I even made a wasabi and ginger headband — because why not? 😂 The best part? I used biodegradable packing peanuts and walked around San Francisco in full sushi form. By the end of the night, the mist had made all the “rice” shrivel up, which honestly made it even funnier.
Still one of my all-time favorite DIY Halloween costume ideas — creative, eco-friendly, and unforgettable. 🍣🎃
