Otama-Shimai Crafts Hilarious Hamster Illustrations in Traditional Japanese Art Style

Otama-Shimai brilliantly blends tradition with whimsy through her digital reinterpretation of Nihonga, a classical Japanese art form. Using an LCD tablet, she brings to life playful hamsters caught in mischievous moments, all rendered in the delicate brushwork and soft color palettes reminiscent of 19th-century Japanese painting. “I work on an LCD tablet from draft to completion. Sketches and drawings are done on paper with pencil, pen or brush,” she shared with DeMilked.

Inspired by Nihonga’s meticulous technique and use of organic pigments, Otama-Shimai adds a fresh twist by weaving in modern-day elements like eyeglasses and high heels. The result? A charming clash of eras where joyful hamsters exist in a world that’s both timeless and cheekily contemporary.

The Japanese artist revealed that she’s been creating these whimsical digital paintings for “only about three years.” Reflecting on her journey, she explained, “As a student, I was drawn to Japanese paintings because of their unique materials and techniques. I was curious about blending digital elements with Nihonga, but it felt like a betrayal of my mentor’s teachings, so I hesitated.” That changed unexpectedly one April Fool’s Day. “I was in a creative slump and decided to take a risk—just for fun. I went digital, and to my surprise, I enjoyed it way more than I expected. That’s how it all started.”
